Study Shows Pill Prevents H.I.V. Among Drug Addicts -
Last July for National HIV Awareness Month we wrote about how antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), which were originally used to treat HIV, can also help prevent HIV negative people whose partners are HIV positive from getting the virus in the first place. Now a new study has shown that preventive use of ARVs works for other groups who are at high risk for HIV too. According to The New York Times:Drug-injecting addicts who took a daily antiretroviral pill were half as likely to become infected with H.I.V. as those who did not, a major new study has found, providing the final piece of evidence that such treatments can prevent AIDS in every group at risk. Earlier clinical trials showed that the therapy can sharply reduce the risk of H.I.V. transmission from mother to child, and in gay and bisexual men and heterosexuals.
As if that news weren’t awesome enough in itself, there’s more! The July article on National HIV Awareness Month also featured news about a then in development at-home HIV test, OraQuick. We’re happy to report that OraQuick is now available online or at drugstores for around $40.00. So for those who can’t get out for National HIV Testing Day (June 27th, 2013), get your test in the privacy of your own home!
